Offline deployment

#1 by aditi_surve

Hello everyone,

I'm conducting fieldwork in rural Kenya (Narok) to conduct experiments for my research. My oTree app is fully coded and functioning, but I am having trouble with offline deployment. I piloted it using Heroku, but there are many households without internet service. We plan to use Android phones for the study; however, there are regions without cell service. I am seeking advice and suggestions to make this work offline. Could anyone please advise on the same?

Thank you,
Aditi

I think the only way is to lug around a WiFi-equipped laptop (that is as light and as reliable as possible) on which you run oTree, and have the cell phones connect to that computer via WiFi.

For Windows PCs, see, for instance, https://www.howtogeek.com/214080/how-to-turn-your-windows-pc-into-a-wi-fi-hotspot/. For Mac computers, see, for instance, https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchlp1540/mac.
